The Technical SEO Audit Checklist We Actually Use

A good audit is short, prioritised, and ends with a list someone can actually ship. Everything else is a PDF nobody opens twice.

Crawl and index first

  • Can Googlebot reach every page that matters, in three clicks or fewer
  • Are there pages indexed that should never have been
  • Do canonicals point where you think they point
  • Is the XML sitemap current and free of redirects and 404s

Then templates, not pages

On most sites a single template problem affects thousands of URLs. Fixing the template is one ticket; fixing the pages is a project. Always look for the template.

Core Web Vitals where they matter

Chase field data, not lab scores, and start with the templates that carry your commercial traffic. A perfect score on a page nobody visits is a vanity metric.

Internal linking as a structural check

Pages with no internal links are invisible regardless of how good they are. Map link depth across the site and treat orphan pages as bugs.

Structured data that is actually valid

Half-implemented schema is worse than none — it creates errors that suppress rich results. Validate everything, and only mark up what is genuinely on the page.

Ship in priority order

  1. Anything blocking indexation
  2. Anything breaking a commercial template
  3. Anything degrading crawl efficiency at scale
  4. Everything else, in impact order
